Title LECTURER ON ROMANCE LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES AND DIRECTOR OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES
School Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Department/Area Romance Languages and Literatures
Position Description
The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) seeks applications for a lecturer in RLL to serve as Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). The appointment is expected to begin on August 1, 2015, or on January 1, 2016.

With responsibility for managing the department’s undergraduate concentration program, the DUS reports directly to the Chair. The DUS is responsible for advising all concentrators individually, for leading student outreach, for overseeing the undergraduate honors program, and for curricular development. The DUS represents the RLL undergraduate program within Harvard College and serves as liaison with other academic and administrative offices across the university. The DUS works closely with the Chair, the Director of Graduate Studies, the Board of Undergraduate Studies, the Director of the Language Program, and faculty in the department to assure the smooth overall functioning of the department, including through membership in the Executive Committee. The DUS is directly supported by an Undergraduate Coordinator.

In addition, the DUS teaches two courses per year. Those courses could be at the “bridge”, 70-90, or 100 levels. Ideally the courses would be designed in the spirit of interdisciplinary classes and social/cultural issues. Possible examples might include, among others, courses on human rights in the Caribbean, on global economics, on immigrant and/or subaltern writing within European countries, or on literary and artistic representations of race, class, and gender.

The position is for a term of three years.

Basic Qualifications
Doctorate in Romance Languages and Literatures or related discipline required by the time the appointment begins. At least three years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

Additional Qualifications
Demonstrated excellence in teaching is desired. Administrative experience a plus. A strong working knowledge of two Romance Languages is desirable. A strong understanding of American higher education, and especially of undergraduate education, a must.
